Pet Cost Calculator & Reorder Reminders

Most pet cost calculators give you one static number and leave you to remember the rest. This one does two jobs: it builds a monthly and yearly budget you can actually edit line by line, and it tracks when your food bag, litter or flea treatment will run out — then reminds you before it does. No account, no app, nothing stored on a server.

1 · Estimate your monthly pet budget

Pick a pet, then adjust any line — your numbers save on this device.

2 · Never run out — reorder reminders

Log what you bought and how long it lasts. We work out the next buy date.

Optional: allow browser alerts and we will ping you when a refill is due while this page is open.

No reminders yet. Tap a preset above, or add your food bag and litter — the two things people always run out of.

Reminders are stored in this browser only — no account, nothing sent to a server. The Calendar button saves a real phone reminder with an alert, which is the dependable way to get notified on the day.

How to plan a pet budget that holds up

1. Start from averages

Pick your pet type, size and life stage. We pre-fill each line with 2025 survey averages so you are never staring at a blank form.

2. Make it yours

Type over any number — your food brand, your vet's prices, your groomer. Totals update instantly and save on your device.

3. Set the reminders

Log a purchase and how long it lasts. Download the calendar file and your phone nags you a day before the pack runs dry.

Why build this at all? The big-name calculators from insurance and charity sites estimate a yearly figure and stop there — nothing saves, nothing reminds you, and the numbers cannot be adjusted to your town or your dog. Retailers solve the problem with autoship subscriptions, but those lock you into one brand at one price. A neutral planner that keeps your own numbers and pings you at the right time was the missing piece, so we built it. If it saves you one emergency midnight drive for litter, it has done its job.

Pet cost questions, answered

How much does a dog cost per month?

Based on 2025 US owner surveys, a small dog runs roughly $90–$120 a month, a medium dog $120–$150, and a large dog $150–$200 once you average food, flea and wormer, a vet fund, grooming, toys and everyday supplies. Puppies and seniors cost more than healthy adults — puppies eat growth-formula food and need extra vet visits, while seniors typically need more medication. Use the calculator above and adjust each line to match your own receipts for a personal number.

How much does a cat cost per month and per year?

A typical indoor cat costs about $95–$110 a month, or roughly $1,150–$1,300 a year, including food, litter, flea and wormer, a vet fund and enrichment. First-year costs add an extra $300–$400 for a litter box, carrier, scratcher, initial vaccines and spay or neuter. Multi-cat homes do not simply double — litter and vet visits scale up, but a 20 lb food bag lasts about the same regardless of how many cats share it.

What costs do most first-time owners forget to budget for?

The three that surprise people most are the emergency vet fund (a single unexpected visit often runs $300–$1,500), flea and wormer year-round rather than just in summer, and consumables like poop bags, litter deodoriser, filter cartridges and replacement toys. Grooming is another one — a medium or long-coated dog professionally groomed every 6–8 weeks can add $25–$40 a month on its own. That is why every line in our calculator is editable, so you can price your own reality instead of a generic average.

How do the reorder reminders work?

Add an item, say how long a pack lasts you (days, weeks or months) and when you bought it. We calculate the date it should run out and show it in a list sorted by urgency — overdue items turn red, items due within three days turn amber. Your reminders are saved privately in your browser, and you can download a real calendar file (.ics) for any item to get a phone alert a day before it is due.

Do I need an account or do you store my data?

No account, no email, no server storage. Your budget numbers and reminders live in your own browser's local storage, and they stay on your device. Clearing your browser data removes them. If you switch devices, simply re-add the two or three items that matter — it takes under a minute.

Are the pre-filled costs accurate for my situation?

They are honest national averages from published 2025 surveys (ASPCA, Synchrony's Cost of Pet Care study, Rover and PDSA), so treat them as a starting point, not a quote. Costs vary a lot by region, brand choice and your pet's health — a raw-fed large dog can spend triple our food figure, while a short-haired cat on a vet fund may spend less. Edit any line and the monthly, yearly and first-year totals update instantly.

Cut your costs next

Once you know where the money goes, our reviews help you spend it better — durable gear that outlasts three cheap versions, and consumables that stretch further.
